Introducing Kevin Smith
Hello, my name is Kevin Smith and although I was born in the UK; I reside just north of Houston, TX in The Woodlands with my wife Yvonne; and her two daughters Ashly and Kaitlyn. I moved to The Woodlands in 2003; after living and working in Houston for about 5 years.
Many people I meet ask me two questions, the first is where do I come from and the second how did I get here. And that really is very much part of my journey.
In the late 70’s, the early part of my career, I work for a engineering company. As a technician, I learned a variety of skills; and eventually ended up working in the works laboratories. I left that company shortly after my 21st birthday to complete my Chemistry degree. My father had taught me that education was the best way to succeed in life and after another four years at the University College, Cardiff in Wales I succeeded in getting what I would call my first JOB. For the next 8 years; I worked for a large UK corporation and was able to file several patents for scientific inventions that I contributed. While working there I was mentored into moving from a technical background into an operations role.
In 1996: I made what was the pivotal move in my career. I joined a family-owned American company in London, however before long I was the first and only employee to move from London to Houston, TX. I was fortunate to travel all around the world meeting amazing people, who worked for large corporations. The family was very entrepreneurial and so I learned how to create products and services that helped other people. In 2005, I made, and let’s be honest, I made a big mistake and returned to the chemical industry as a business planner – why was it a mistake? I worked very hard and no one seemed particularly happy.
In 2008, I decided that to be successful, I needed to become my own boss and for a while I owned a franchise coaching business. It seemed a good idea, but the industries mantra was to build a business such that you didn’t have to work in it; and it seemed to me that I was the one working the hardest to set other people financially free. And then one day, a client introduced me to a new product, which if I referred to others would make me money. I didn’t appreciate that this was network marketing at the time, but I was sold later on the concept that it was possible to make money, lots of money if we worked the business. One, two, three businesses later and network marketing (aka MLM) is very part of my entrepreneurial culture – of course I want to help people who are in my business, but truthfully I am an advocate of the industry; so while you may not like me, my company, please take an open minded look at what network marketing has to offer.
